Lime Street in our sketchbooks — Holiday Inn, Liverpool

Liverpool urban sketches from the Holiday Inn on 5 October 2026: watercolour, ink and pencil views of Lime Street station, with sketchbooks and hands at work.

On Monday 5 October 2026 we returned to the Holiday Inn on Lime Street, Liverpool. From the windows, the station roof and North Western Hotel offered plenty to draw. Some sketchbooks take in the whole street; others concentrate on an arched window, a tower or the lines of a railway platform.

The collection brings together watercolour, pencil and ink studies, photographs of hands at work, and the sketchbooks laid out together at the end of the session.

The view across Lime Street

Lime Street station opened in 1836. Its distinctive arched roofs and neighbouring hotel still frame the view from the Holiday Inn, giving us a mix of broad curves, repeated windows and small details to work with. Station history: Network Rail.
