On the 4th of March, the Downtown Sketchers convened for another exhilarating sketching session, this time at the illustrious Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool. Despite the hint of spring in the air, with dry, sunny weather accompanied by a brisk wind, the allure of the majestic interior proved irresistible to all.
A true architectural gem, the Adelphi Hotel stands as a testament to timeless elegance, its third incarnation unveiled in 1914 under the visionary guidance of Frank Atkinson. Constructed under the meticulous oversight of Liverpool’s finest firms, it surpassed all expectations, establishing itself as a pinnacle of luxury. Guests of the era marveled at its lavish offerings, from an indoor swimming pool and tennis courts to Turkish baths and shooting galleries. The hotel’s dining establishments, blending French and English cuisine, were renowned for their innovation, while the Sefton Suite, a replica of the Titanic’s smoking lounge, added a touch of nostalgia. Notably, each room boasted a revolutionary feature: a telephone, symbolizing a moment of profound hospitality innovation.
As the urban sketchers gathered in the Main Hall, reclining on plush sofas and indulging in table service for coffee, a new talent, Sue, joined our ranks, adding to the vibrant tapestry of creativity. Energized by caffeine and camaraderie, we dispersed throughout the hotel’s ground floor in search of inspiration.
After an hour of spirited sketching, we reconvened at our sofa haven for a “throw-down,” a jubilant showcase of our artistic interpretations of the hotel’s splendor. To the delight of all, Chris surprised us with a delectable treat – homemade shortbread, elevating the experience even further.
