Basking in Sunshine and History: Downtown Sketchers Capture the Charm of Pavilion Café at Aldham Robarts Library!

The first rays of true summer sunshine graced Liverpool this Monday, and the Downtown Sketchers seized the opportunity to explore a hidden gem – the Pavilion Cafe at Aldham Robarts Library! Nestled within the tranquil courtyard of this historic university building, the cafe provided a picturesque backdrop for an afternoon of artistic exploration. This old mixed with the new outdoor space, boasting an attractive green environment and a captivating birch grove, offered a refreshing escape from the urban bustle, while still retaining a touch of historic charm.

A Sunny Sanctuary: Sketching the Courtyard’s Architectural Gems

Stepping into the Pavilion Cafe courtyard was like stepping back in time. Flanked by the imposing neoclassical façade of Aldham Robarts Library, the space exudes an air of academic grandeur. The newly-planted greenery, with its vibrant flower beds and towering birch trees, created a refreshing oasis bathed in golden sunlight – a stark contrast to the usual Liverpool weather our Monday sketching group is accustomed to! This captivating scene instantly captivated our sketchers, who settled in with their tools, eager to capture its unique essence.

Engulfed in History: Sketching the Details of University Life

Most of our sketchers, basking in the long-awaited sunshine, opted to focus on the architectural grandeur of the surrounding buildings. Seasoned urban sketchers meticulously rendered the intricate details of Aldham Robarts Library’s facade – the grand columns, the ornate stonework, and the weathered clock tower bathed in the warm afternoon light. Others chose to capture the more intimate details of the courtyard – students engrossed in books beneath the shade of the birch trees, or couples enjoying a coffee break on the cafe’s terrace. These sketches offered a glimpse into the vibrant life of the university, a perfect blend of history and modern-day activity.

Coffee, Camaraderie, and a Sunny “Throw-Down”

After a fulfilling afternoon of sketching under the clear blue sky, we gathered for our customary “throw-down” – a post-sketching social gathering where we share our creations and celebrate artistic expression. This sunny “throw-down,” held within the Pavilion Cafe itself, was filled with lively conversations, encouraging critiques, and a shared sense of accomplishment. Over steaming cups of coffee and delicious treats, the sense of community that defines the Downtown Sketchers flourished under the warm rays of sunshine.

A Welcoming Space for All Urban Sketchers

As always, the Downtown Sketchers meetup at Pavilion Cafe fostered a sense of inclusivity. Our sessions are open to everyone, regardless of experience level. This sunny afternoon saw seasoned urban sketchers in Liverpool sharing their expertise with enthusiastic newcomers, all united by a love for art and a desire to capture the essence of this vibrant city.

A Day Filled with Sunshine, Art, and Community

The combination of a stunning new outdoor venue, the opportunity to capture the historic architecture, and the supportive spirit of the Downtown Sketchers community made for a truly memorable afternoon.
