On the 11th of December 2023, the Downtown Sketchers embarked on a festive adventure at The Welkin, a Wetherspoon nestled in the urban landscape. Named after the Old English word for sky, The Welkin pays homage to Jeremiah Horrocks, a celestial figure in Liverpool’s history and the Father of English Astronomy.
Gathering upstairs, we settled on a long table, shielded from the unpredictable weather that wasn’t exactly ideal for unleashing our creativity onto the streets. Ah, the perks of sketching at Wetherspoon pubs – they’re practically urban sketching sanctuaries with their legendary unlimited coffee refills! The sketchers wasted no time loading up on this essential sketcher fuel, contemplating the genius idea of a Wetherspoon sponsorship for a grand UK tour complete with endless coffee. A moment of reflection led us to consider perhaps a partnership with a company specializing in the more luxurious coffee blends.
Seated around a long table, we delved into sketching both internal and external views, finding inspiration in the limited yet captivating perspectives offered by our surroundings. Sometimes, constraints bring out the best in urban sketchers, and this day was no exception.
As the clock ticked away, it was pens down, and the excitement reached its peak with a “throw-down.” The sketches were laid out for all to see, unveiling a collage of diverse vantage points chosen by our incredibly talented group. The unique viewpoints reflected the individuality and creativity that make urban sketching a vibrant and dynamic community.
To top off this delightful day of artistic exploration, the urban sketchers had a special treat in store – a Christmas feast at Bistro Pierre. The ambiance was filled with warmth as gifts and cards exchanged hands, adding a touch of holiday magic to our gathering.
